Orange Crush 7 - Gray 3
The Orange Crush opened the 2000-01 season with a decisive victory over their Southside rivals Monday night.
The teams were tied at 1 after the first period. The Crush came onto the ice flying in the second and newcomer Dave Brown scored a power play goal just 20 seconds into the period. That was followed up just over a minute later by Mike "OGB" Dorris, who fired a wrister from the top of the circle that went off of the crossbar and gave the Crush a two goal lead. The scoring continued throughout the period with a goal from newcomer Jim Barr and two from Matt "#12 unassisted" Gass. The Crush did give up an even strength and a power play goal to the Gray team. Carrying a 6-3 lead into the third, Dave "It's not a skirt" Taylor scored to finish off a strong offensive performance.
The team played a solid first game. Considering it was the first time many of the players had skated together the Crush can look forward to a strong season.

Orange Crush 4 - Classic Sports 2
The Orange Crush continued a strong start to the winter season with a hard fought win over the black C4 Classic Sports team Monday night in the West end.
The Crush put heavy pressure on the former roller hockey team Classic Sports from the moment the puck was dropped. Matt “#12 unassisted” Gass showed incredible patience by collecting a loose puck in front of the net, waiting for the goalie to drop and the lifting it over him to start off the scoring. Gass followed up with another goal 11:35 into the period. Justin Klug put the Crush up 3-0 with a goal in his first appearance as an Orange Crush. Classic Sports were able to score their first goal 19:19 into the period just seconds after a unsuccessful Orange Crush power play.
If the game were scored like a prize fight, the second period definitely went to Classic Sports. The boys in Orange were playing a little flat. Stellar goaltending by John Jordan allowed the Crush to escape the period only giving up one power play goal. The score was 3-2 going into the third.
The teams battled scorelessly in the third period until Dennis “I was taking anger management classes until the bastards threw me out” Murray scored a shortie on a blistering wrist shot that left the Classic Sport goalie frozen. (He paid me to say that) That clutch goal allowed the Crush a two goal cushion for the balance of the game.

Rat Bastards 5 - Orange Crush 4 OT
The Orange Crush suffered their first setback of the season in a heartbreaking overtime shoot-out loss to the Yellow Rat Bastards (RBs) Wednesday night.
The game started off on a bad note as the rink was running over half an hour behind the scheduled 9:40PM start time. Then as the Crush were watching the game on the adjoining rink somebody said "Hey isn't that our goalie out there?" It turns out that the C1 Gray team's goalie decided not to show and Orange Crush goaltender John "JJ" Jordan volunteered to fill in. So after waiting for our ice and our goaltender to finish on the next ice the puck was finally dropped at about 11:00PM. (John was able to give the gray team an 8-0 shutout.)
The Crush got off to strong start, keeping heavy offensive pressure on the RBs. But their fill in (former pro) goalie Chris Holstrom was very strong between the pipes. The RB’s were able to slip one past Crush netminder John “JJ” Jordan to go up by 1. The Crush retaliated with a beautiful short handed goal by Jim Barr. That was followed up by Matt “#12 Unassisted” Gass breaking in alone and burying it. At the end of one the Crush held a 2-1 lead. Mike "OGB" Dorris was violated late in period when some guy who must have heard what OGB stood for tried to see if it was true. Later in the locker room OGB said it was a good thing that he had a tail pad in his hockey pants.
The Crush had a rough second period, being badly out skated and only managing one goal. (Our second period slumps would have nothing to do with our strict training regiment of Budweiser and Camels.) The RB’s were able to score two that knotted the score at 3’s going into the third.
Justin Klug of the Crush scored with 7:33 remaining and the Crush were able to fend off the RB’s attacks until the refs decided that they wanted to see a shoot out. During a melee in front of the scorers box with 2:38 remaining the refs handed out offsetting roughing penalties to Crush forward Sean Gulla and some Mullet Head from the RB's. But the ref then decided that the boys in Orange would want to try and kill a penalty for the final 2 minutes and added a second roughing penalty to Justin Klug. The Crush were able to kill over half of the penalty before the RB's best player broke in through the defense and scored with 1:00 left in regulation. If that wasn't bad enough the guy then proceeded to bust a double-axle figure skating jump. "Hey buddy put a skirt on!" was heard more than once from the Crush bench.
The game went to a shoot out the 3 skaters shooting for the Orange Crush were all shut down. JJ stopped the first two RB's shooters including the figure skating dude. The third skater was able to slide the puck under JJ's pads to win the shootout for the Rat Bastards.

Orange Crush 7 - Main Street Beer 4
The Orange Crush staged a fantastic comeback at the west end rink Wednesday night. After a 3-1 first period deficit the Crush kept banging and grinding to defeat the Summer League Champion Main Street Beer (MSB) team 7-4.
The first period was mistake filled as the Crush allowed MSB to score just under 3 minutes into the period. Crush centerman Dave "Thunder Bay" Brown countered that goal with an end to end rush and buried a blistering slap shot over the shoulder of the MSB goalie to record goal one of his season first hat trick. Unfortunately the Crush hadn't shaken the 1st period cobwebs and after a series of mistakes, allowed MSB to score twice more to end the first period trailing 3-1.
The second period was much better for the Crush. The first period jitters were gone, passes were connecting and they were able to put some heavy offensive pressure on MSB. Dave "It's not a skirt" Taylor scored to slice the lead by one. The Crush did allow MSB to score another but countered it 40 seconds later with a goal from Matt "#12 unassisted" Gass. The score at the end of two MSB 4 - OC 3.
The third period was completely dominated by the Crush. Even skating 4 men short of their full roster the boys gave 100% on every shift. Brown scored his second of three with another blast over the MSB net minder to tie the score at four. Dennis "I really was sick last week" Murray broke in alone after a perfectly executed breakout play from the defensive pair of S. Davis/Robinson to put the Crush up by one. After stopping repeated attempts by MSB to tie the game Brown beat the MSB goalie again to notch his third goal of the night. Defenseman Jack Hauschild scored an empty netter with :07 seconds remaining after MSB had pulled their goalie in a last ditch attempt to salvage the game.
Both teams played a very clean and disciplined penalty free hockey game which is extremely rare in this league. It goes to show that two quality teams can play a hard fought game without people trying to take off someone's head with their stick.

Orange Crush 9 - JR (Maroon C10) 8
The Orange Crush won in their second shootout of the season. In a wild high scoring affair the Crush managed to come away with the win after Defenseman Brad “what do you mean you want me to take the shot” Robinson scored as the third shooter in the overtime shoot out!
The game started out with the Crush expecting to face a last place Maroon team that had only scored one goal this season. With two of their top three scorers out for the night the Crush felt that they still would have the game under control. Dennis "I really had to be out of town this week" Murray and Matt "It was my 18th wedding anniversary" Gass were both missing from the line up. Unbeknown to the Crush the Maroon team made had made some major roster changes prior to the contest. They replaced their goalie and acquired the services of A league sniper JR Jarelle.
During the preseason captains meeting it was agreed that there would be absolutely no walk on substitutions allowed. I guess that the rule wasn't meant to include rink managers or friends of the Hockey Director. (Editorial commentary)
Anyway the game started out very fast paced with JR completely dictating the pace of the game. Just five minutes into the contest he was able to slid the puck past Crush net minder John "JJ" Jordan to notch the first of his seven goals. The Crush however were not to be kept down and Dave "Thunder Bay" Brown was about to set a new team record. He scored a first period HAT TRICK that was completed in less than FIVE MINUTES of play! Brown notched three goals and then set up Steve "Zamboni" Burton on a pretty one timer from the slot all in the first period of play! JR, I mean the maroon team, No actually I mean JR, scored twice more to close the gap with the Crush leading 4-3. Before the period ended though Jay "The Postman" Mulligan delivered a crushing check to some poor victim in a Maroon sweater. The hit cost Mulligan a five minute major (roughing), a ten minute misconduct (checking from behind/boarding) and a game suspension. I'll bet the other partners at his firm wont be messing with him anymore!
The second period the Crush let their tempers get the better of them and amassed a total of 29 minutes of penalties. It seemed as if the team was at least one man down for the entire period. But the penalty killing was superb with the Maroon team only able to score one goal in the entire period. Meanwhile in between killing penalties and sitting in the box the Crush were able to notch two more goals during the second. Jim Barr scored and so did Brown before he had his run in with JR. JR was carrying the puck while Brown was back checking through the neutral zone. As Brown was forcing the play to the outside JR attempted to go between him and the boards Brown made a nice defensive play and played the body. The refs blew the whistle, JR blew his top and started talking smack. Brown not wanting to back down, informed JR of his young age and mistake in threatening him. The refs intervened, JR threw a sucker punch and Brown went after him. At the end of the altercation the penalties handed out were 2 majors and a Game Misconduct to Brown and only a 3 minute roughing minor to Jarelle. I guess being a manager has its privileges. At the end of 2 the Crush led 6-4.
The third period saw the Crush settling down and playing hockey but it seemed that they were maybe a little worn out from killing penalties. The Maroon team scored two goals to tie the game before Scott Davis passed from one point to Robinson on the other who took a hard slap shot that was wide of the net. The puck bounce off the end boards came out in front to Sean Lucas who was able to wrist it over the Maroon goalie to put the Crush up by one. Dave Taylor was able to score off of a nice feed by Justin Klug to increase the Crush lead to two. Jarelle then took over the play for the Maroon team and was able to score twice more to tie the game 8-8 in regulation.
The game went in to a shootout with each team selecting three shooters. Crush goalie Jordan was able to stop all 3 attempts by Maroon including Jarelle. Scott Davis, and Justin Klug were thwarted by the Maroon goalie. Brad Robinson was the last Crush shooter, before it would go to sudden death. Robinson skated in on the Maroon goalie moved the puck wide right and beat the goalie through the five hole for the win!
Orange Crush 7 - Blue 2
The Orange Crush returned to their home south side ice in style with a 7-2 win over the Blue team Monday Night. Dave Brown scored his second hat trick in two games to lead the Crush to victory.
The Crush got off to an extremely slow start having trouble with their breakouts and getting trapped in their own end. Brown finally broke loose on a feed from Dennis Murray to score five minutes into the first period. The Blue team evened the score five minutes later when a puck slipped through the pads of Crush net minder John Jordan. Murray skated the puck from the Crush's own blue line beat a blue defender and then backhanded a shot over the blue goalie to give the Crush a one goal lead at the end of one.
The second period was scoreless with both net minders doing a stellar job of stopping any scoring chances. The blue team took the first penalty in the closing minute of the second by bringing down Crush winger Dave Taylor along the boards. The score at the end of two remained 2-1 in favor of the Crush.
The third period started with the Crush having the man advantage and Taylor was able to capitalize with a shot from the slot on a feed from Murray working behind the blue teams net. That opened the flood gates for the Crush offense. The boy's in Orange followed that goal up with four more including goals by Justin Klug, Brown scoring his second and third of the night and Jim Barr. The defense played stellar in the third only allowing one goal by the blue team. Brown's and Barr's came on ensuing power plays that saw the Crush dominate the man advantage with an amazing 3 for 3 100% power play conversion rate for the night. The Crush also remained very disciplined throughout the game taking no penalties even in retaliation.
Orange Crush 5 - Gang Green 2
After a one game home stand the Orange Crush hit the road again to defeat the Green team Monday Night. The win kept the Crush in first place and kept alive their undefeated (during regulation) season. The game was not the best ever played by the Crush.
The first period saw the Crush unable to mount a serious offensive attack until Dennis Murray scored off of a feed from Jim Barr almost ten minutes into the game. The Crush went to the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Gang Green opened the second with a strong start and were able to net their first goal just 45 seconds into the period. Former Orange Crush blue liner J.P. Klouisa buried a rebound off of Crush goaltender John Jordan. After that wake up call the Crush buckled down and started pressuring the Green defense. Justin Klug scored on a hard slap shot from the high slot after a pass from Brad Robinson who then crashed the net to set a screen. Dave Taylor scored from close range on a pass from Matt Gass. Gass then slid one past the Green goaltender after a flurry of attempts by the Crush were all thwarted. Gass' goal came off of a setup from Klug. At the end of two the Crush led 4-1.
The third period saw many Crush offensive efforts ended by the Green goalie who single handedly kept them in the game. Green's only offense came from #11 who was cherry picking at the blueline most of the game and J.P. Kloisa. Klousia when asked why he didn't don the Orange sweater this year was quoted saying "I didn't get my s*#t together until the day before the season opened." We think that it was all the smack he used to take about when his girlfriend would come to the games last year and he would spend the entire intermission sucking face. (Actually we were all jealous because most of us are old and married and he is young and single.) Anyway due to his training last year as a member of the Orange Crush Klousia managed to score his second of the night for Green with just over six minutes remaining in the game. With two minutes left to play, Barr connected with Murray again who broke in and fired a rising wrist shot just under the crossbar to seal the victory for the Orange Crush.
Unfortunately the Crush did not play anywhere near their potential. Though the shot count could probably be estimated at Crush 50 - Green 10. Quality scoring chances were few. Definite improvement will need to come as the Crush face the two teams that are chasing them in the standings over the next two weeks.

White Lightning 5 - Orange Crush 4
The Orange Crush suffered their first loss in regulation Wednesday night to a chippy and whiny White Team. If anyone from the Lightning reads this (You guys are a pretty good team chill out on the whining and crying.)
The Crush definitely did not bring their A game and allowed Lightning to score 3 unanswered goals in the first period. The score at the end of one White 3 - Orange 0.
The second started out a little better when Dennis "I forgot to go to anger management this week" Murray finally got one past the Lightning goalie. But the Lightning scored again to keep a three goal lead. Tempers started flaring during the period as the Lightning insisted on keeping their sticks waving in the face of Crush players and crying to the Refs every time one of their players were bumped by someone in Orange. After two White 4 - Orange 1
The third finally saw the Crush come alive. Defenseman Scott Davis scored his first of the season with a beautiful wrist shot from the point. Dave "I ate too much turkey over Thanksgiving" Brown finally digested some of that bird and came alive with a goal. And Dave "Wow he really can skate when there is a loose puck" Taylor added another. But the Crush allowed the Lightning to score another while Murray was discussing sexual preferences and familial status with a member of the Lightning. Things finally came to a head when the Lighting Goalie went after defenseman Brad Robinson who was jabbing at a loose puck before the refs blew the play dead. The series of events went something like this: Lightning Goalie slashed Robinson, Robinson retaliated, Robinson tackled from behind by member of Lightning, member of Lightning jumped on by Murray. Robinson jumped on by another member of Lightning. Murray removed member of Lightning's helmet and landed a few quick ones, Murray and #7 from Lightning ejected from game. (At least that's how I think things happened.)
So Murray lost his chance at the Lady Bing, Brown broke his streak of hat tricks and the Crush broke their winning streak and are now in second place.

Orange Crush 8 - Richmond Ice Wolves (Red) 4
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?
Not the Orange Crush. The Crush defeated the Wolves handily in an 8-4 victory Wednesday night to regain their first place position.
The Crush came out of the box
flying, using short shifts and quick changes to keep their legs fresh. Dave
"I definitely have digested all of that turkey" Brown was back in
top form and scored first for the Crush just four minutes into the game, off of
a feed from Dave "Hey this hustling stuff isn't
so bad after all" Taylor and Sean "GTS
out of your P" Lucas. Two minutes later the line of Klug/Gass/Barr
added to the tally with the first goal of Jim
"Buffalo Wing" Barr's career first hat trick! Not to be outdone Brown
added another along with Taylor. The
first period saw the Wolves get a little frustrated and take a few penalties but
the refs might have gotten a bit carried away by ejecting a Wolves' defenseman
for "shooting the puck" at the ref. Nobody on the ice thought
that it was intentional (except the ref that tossed him) but you have to be
responsible for your actions whether intentional or not. At the end of
one Crush 4 - Ice Wolves 1
The second period started with Justin "You think this is intense, try going 80 mph 2 inches off of the pavement" Klug taking a roughing penalty when all he was trying to do was let one of the Wolves players know that it is not proper to place the blade of your stick under someone's face shield. While the Crush were killing that penalty Barr took a shot from the top of the circle and beat the Wolves goalie for his second goal of the night. The Crush got an opportunity at a power play midway through the period. On a face off in the Wolves zone Klug won the draw sent it back to Robinson on the point who fired a low slapshot that rebounded off of the goalie's pads to Barr who had driven the net. Barr promptly buried the puck for his third of the night! (If we ever had any fans come to our games this is the point in the game where they would have thrown their hats on the ice.) The Wolves did pick up two in the period to bring the score to Crush 6 - Wolves 3.
The third period got underway with a beautiful goal from the point by "Long Island" Jack Hauschild on another face off won by Klug. The defensive pair of J. Davis/Hauschild played an excellent game. The Wolves answered with a goal a minute later. The balance of the third saw mostly defensive play until Brown broke loose from the two or three Wolves players that had started shadowing his every move to score his third of the night and seal the Crush's victory. (At this point any fans remaining who hadn't thrown their hats before would have thrown them now.) Crush netminder John "I miss Dennis, nobody picked on me tonight" Jordan played a stellar game between the pipes
And thus ended an extremely well played game by the Crush to regain their rightful spot on top of the standings of the Richmond C League. That also ended the first rotation of teams. We have played every team once. Next week we start over again with the Southside Gray Firefighters. They have their full roster back and will be a tough opponent.

Gray Firefighters 7 - Orange Crush 4
Crush's flame gets extinguished by the firefighters...
The Orange Crush were defeated for only the second time this year by their southside rival's the Gray Firefighters. The Crush were without the services of 1st and 2nd line centermen Dave "The Canuck" Brown who was visiting the Great White North and Dennis "I have to quit this job it is killing my hockey career" Murray who was allegedly away on business.
The game started off with both teams playing strong defensively. The Crush scored early in the period only to have the goal waved off, by the one ref that showed up, because of an alleged two line pass. Not only was there just one ref, but he had a bum foot so he couldn't even keep up with the play. But the Crush were able to put up a tally that counted on a goal from Matt "We need a stick boy" Gass on a setup by Mike "OGB" Dorris. Unfortunately that was all that the Crush could manage in the period. The Gray team's defenseman began rushing the puck unchallenged through the neutral zone and firing booming slap shots at crush net minder John "JJ" Jordan. #7 for gray who is a complete moron scored a hat trick on big slap shots. Justin Klug decided to make things interesting by mixing it up near the end of the period with one of the Grey defenseman. Both of them ended up serving six minutes each for offsetting roughing calls. The game looked as though it might get out of hand with a lot of cheap stick work happening behind the play (mostly #7 gray) as there was only one ref and he didn't seem to be all with it that night. At the end of one the Crush were trailing 3-1
The rink wisely sent over two more refs at the beginning of the second period to restore order before things got out of hand. The boy's in Orange came out in the second ready to play and Steve "Zamboni" Burton scored off of a feed from defenseman Jack Hauschild. The Crush were able to tie the game at 3's a minute later on a goal by defenseman Brad Robinson who one timed a pass from Gass in the high slot. The gray team was able to take the lead again five minutes later. But the Crush were determined to stay in it and tied it again on a goal from defenseman Scott Davis on a shot from the top of the circle off of a pass from Klug. But the gray team scored again on an odd man rush to end the second leading 5-4.
The Crush were unable to mount any serious offensive attack in the third and wound up giving up two more goals to finish the game with their worst defeat of the season 7-4.
We are off for the next two weeks for the holidays. Everyone have a great Christmas and New Year and we will see you at our next game on January 10, 2001.

Orange Crush 7 - Classic Sports 3
The Crush start the New Year right!
The Orange Crush started off the second half of their season with a decisive win over the former roller hockey team Classic Sports.
After a twenty day break the team donned the Orange sweaters again to bang the puck around. With teammates scattered over most of North America during the break most of the boys hadn't skated together in a while. The only skating that some had over the break was pond hockey in a hidden cove on Swift Creek Reservoir. But the team all continued their strict daily training regime of 12 oz curls.
From the opening face off you couldn't tell the team was off for almost a month. Dave "Thunder Bay" Brown won the draw and with a pass to Dave "I couldn't listen to that professor drone on anymore" Taylor and a feed to Matt "I live up to my name" Gass who promptly buried the puck behind the Classic goalie the Crush were leading 1-0 with only 7 seconds ticked off of the clock. The Classic team was slightly shell struck and had trouble penetrating the Crush's defense for most of the period. They did manage to score to tie the game 1-1.
The second period started out a little slower for the Crush with it taking all of 30 seconds to light the lamp. Dennis "The Sudafed Kid" Murray blistered a shot into the Classic net on a set up from Mike "OGB" Dorris and Jim "Buffalo Wing" Barr. From there the Crush went on a serious offensive attack and the scoring floodgates opened. Defenseman Jack "In your face" Hauschild scored on a shot from the right point set up by Justin "X Factor" Klug. Brown scored off of a Hauschild pass. Barr scored from Klug. Murray scored on a pass from Brad "Nice pass to the other team's best player at you own blueline" Robinson. With the Crush dominating the play of the second period some members of the Classic team (not mentioning any names - Moss) became a little frustrated and decided that since there was no way to stop the Crush that they would begin to cheap shot and high stick the better opponents. Typical C league mentality "lets see if we can seriously injure someone in a rec hockey game." But no penalties were called as most of the members of the both teams were able to play clean hockey. (I wont mention the head butting contest in front of the Crush bench as it occurred four feet from a ref who was completely oblivious to the whole thing.) The Classic team were able to net one goal late in the period. The score at the end of two was 6-2.
The third period saw the team laying back to play defense and controlling the neutral zone. The team finally came awake after Classic scored with 8:20 remaining and realized that a three goal lead isn't a lot in this league with over eight minutes remaining. The boys were able to rest easy again when Murray scored his third of the night off of a setup by Sean "Now appearing at center ice..." Gulla and defenseman John "JD" Davis. John "JJ" Jordan stood tall between the pipes for the Crush after giving the team a scare before the opening face off by announcing that his ankle was injured and he didn't think that he would make it through the game.
The Crush played a good game overall and kicked off the second half of the season in a good way. Next week will be our chance to defeat the Rat Bastard's and Twinkle Toes.

In what could have been an instant replay of their earlier season matchup, the Rat Bastards put on a late rally to force a shoot out and steal a point from the Crush. Full Recap to follow soon..
Red Ice Wolves 4 - Orange Crush 3
The Crush falter on home ice and drop one to the Wolves.
The Crush playing for the first time in months on their home ice "The Orange Crush Memorial Arena" were unable to overcome a very hungry Wolves team. The game was scoreless well into the second period until the Crush's own Jimmy "Buffalo Wing" Barr buried one of his patented laser shots to give the Crush the lead. The Wolves retaliated with two goals in the final two minutes of the period to lead the Crush 2-1.
The third period saw alot of end to end action but the play of the game had to be the face off won by Dennis "Would you *!@#ing Defenseman quit hitting me with your slapshots!" Murray. Murray drew the puck straight back to Dave "The Canuck" Brown on the point who fired a blistering one timer past the Wolves netminder. But the Wolves scored twice more before Matt "#12 Unassisted" Gass scored with only :37 remaining to close the game with the Wolves defeating the Crush 4-3.
